Share what helps you feel at ease

  • Tell the team if you have concerns about who is present, being overheard, exposure during an examination, or an unfamiliar care routine.
  • A useful phrase is, 'Before we start, I would like to talk about what would help me feel comfortable.'

Ask about information and photographs

  • If wound photographs or other records are discussed, ask why they are needed, how they will be shared, and what permission is requested.
  • Before sending personal health information, ask the team which communication method it wants you to use.

Make room for questions

  • Ask for an explanation of an examination or proposed treatment and say when you need a moment to understand the answer.
  • If a family member usually joins visits, let the team know when you would like part of the conversation to be private.
