Choose the role you want

  • Decide whether you would like the person to listen, write down instructions, help ask questions, or assist with scheduling.
  • Share those preferences with the person beforehand so you both understand what would feel supportive.

Arrange participation

  • Ask the care team how a support person can join the visit or conversation and what permission may be needed to share information.
  • If the person cannot attend, ask how you can share your questions or receive a written explanation of the agreed plan.

Keep your voice in the conversation

  • Let the clinician know which concerns you want to explain yourself and when you would like your support person to add details.
  • You can also ask for part of the conversation to happen privately or tell the team when your participation preferences change.
